Cheesesteak Review #39: Franzone’s Pizzeria and Restaurant of Bridgeport

One of the worst cheesesteaks I have ever eaten in my life came at the hands of Franzone’s Pizzeria Restaurant and Sports Bar located in Conshohocken.  I figured since moving to Bridgeport it is only fair to review a cheesesteak with provolone and fried onions from the Franzone’s Pizzeria and Restaurant located off of 5th and Dekalb in Bridgeport.  Thankfully it was a good call.  I don’t think I ever want to taste the monstrosity known as a Franzone’s Conshohocken cheesesteak ever again.

Bread-The bread was actually the worst part of the cheesesteak.  It wasn’t fresh and it was a little soggy.  I don’t know how it got soggy as there wasn’t any grease or juice from the meat.  The taste was OK but it was nothing special.  I can’t really say anything else about the bread other than it was extremely disappointing.

Cheese-The cheese was pretty good.  It was very tasty and it was melted throughout the entire cheesesteak.  I would have liked a little more of it because I love cheese, but the amount included was proportionate to the rest of the ingredients contained within the cheesesteak so I guess I shouldn’t complain.

Meat-The meat included was very good.  It was good quality as the sandwich was without any gristle or fat.  The meat was cooked pretty evenly so I didn’t have to deal with any burnt or undercooked pieces either.  The meat was seasoned pretty heavily with salt and pepper and this just added even more to the  awesome taste.  Lastly the meat was cut up in pretty small pieces, but it wasn’t cut up as fine as I am used too.  With that being the only part of the meat that I did not like, I won’t let that impact my overall rating of the cheesesteak.

Amount-Besides the terrible bread, the only other negative of this cheesesteak was the size.  The bread was your typical 10 inch roll.  It was pretty filling even though it was soggy, but it was the rest of the cheesesteak that was lacking in size.  The amount of meat included was pitiful.  From the picture below hopefully you can get an idea of why I am so frustrated.  Even if they doubled the meat this cheesesteak would have contained less meat than most other cheesesteaks I have reviewed.  The amount of cheese and fried onions was also way below average.  The amount of ingredients really hurt the overall rating of this cheesesteak.

Fried Onions-The fried onions were only average.  They were mixed throughout the cheesesteak which is a major plus.  They were also cooked tothe perfect texture.  They weren’t to soft nor were they to hard.  With a little more onions included I would have given them a little bit higher of a rating.

The cheesesteak from the Frazone’s located in Bridgeport was 10x’s better than the cheesesteak from the Franzone’s located in Conshohocken, but it still wasn’t that great.  Overall it was only average.  I doubt I will ever try a cheesesteak from either Franzone’s again.  Instead I will stick to their awesome swirl pizza, which is probably the best tasting pizza I have ever had in my life.  Other than pizza and cheesesteaks they have a pretty extensive menu.  Not to mention they have a fairly large takeout beer selection as well.  So for now I can’t really recommend the Bridgeport Franzone’s Pizzeria and Restaurants’ cheesesteak but if you have to choose a cheesesteak from their Bridgeport or Conshohocken location be sure to choose Bridgeport.
