Cheesesteak Review #47: Pie in the Sky Restaurant and Pizzeria of Wayne
3.5 out of 5 stars
For my next review I traveled to Wayne on the Main Line. Off of Lancaster Avenue not to far away from Villanova University there’s a small pizza shop called Pie in the Sky Restaurant and Pizzeria. According to their menu they have been awarded the best cheesesteak on the Main Line in both 2008 and 2009. So needless to say I was pretty excited when I finally got a chance to review their cheesesteak. As usual I ordered a cheesesteak with provolone and fried onions.
Bread-The bread was your typical Conshy roll. It was pretty fresh and had a good taste. The roll fit in perfectly with the rest of the sandwich. The little amount of grease produced by the meat was absorbed pretty well by the roll.
Cheese-The cheese they included was only mediocre. The cheese was melted throughout the entire sandwich so thats a plus, but my main complaint with the cheese was that it was kind of bland tasting. Typically you can taste the cheese in a cheesesteak but with this steak sandwich I could barely taste anything.
Meat-The meat was really tasty. It was seasoned to perfection and it was decent quality. There was a little grease produced from the meat but I am not going to hold that against them because the roll did an amazing job absorbing it so I didn’t have to worry about grease dripping everywhere. Other than the grease there was no fat or gristle I had to deal with plus it was cooked pretty well so there were no burnt or undercooked pieces like you often find in average cheesesteaks. I almost forgot to mention that the meat was diced up in too small pieces which I am becoming quite fond of.
Amount-This cheesesteak lacked in two areas when it came to amount. First they should have included more cheese. I am assuming that if they did I would have been able to taste the cheese at least a little bit. Secondly they should include a little more meat. If you look at the picture below you can see that the last 2 inches or so of both ends of the sandwich are void of meat. This was highly disappointing because the meat tasted amazing and I would have loved to be a little more full at the completion of the sandwich. The roll was average in size, around 10 inches and there was a fair amount of fried onions included. So my only problems were with the meat and cheese.
Fried Onions-The fried onions were a little above average. They were a lot included in the sandwich and they were mixed throughout the entire sandwich. They were also grilled to a nice crispy texture.
Pie in the Sky located in Wayne served up a cheesesteak that was a little above average. There wasn’t one ingredient that stood out from the rest but I guess I can recommend it if you are travelling through Wayne and aren’t looking to be blown away by a cheesesteak. It amazes me how they got awarded the best cheesesteak on the Main Line two years in a row a few years ago. Being a pizza place they have a pretty large menu so if cheesesteaks arent your thing there is plenty of other stuff that you can try. One other minor gribe I have about this place is that the parking sucks. It’s only street parking so if you go during lunch or dinner hours be prepared to drive around for a little until you can find a spot and get ready to walk a few blocks.
