Cheesesteak Review #52: Steaks on South of Philadelphia

4.0 out of 5 stars

Steaks on South on Urbanspoon

My next cheesesteak review took me back to South Street in the city of Philadelphia.    This time around I sampled Steaks on South.  Steaks on South is located in the same block (300) as Ishkabibbles, one of my recent cheesesteak reviews, which I gave a 4.5 rating too.  Recently Steaks on South was voted The Best Cheesesteak on NBC.com and they won by a landslide.  Finishing very far behind Steaks on South was Geno’s Steaks and Jim’s Steaks.  As usual I ordered a cheesesteak with provolone and fried onions.

Bread-The bread was extremely fresh and also very tasty.  I visited Steaks on South pretty early in the day so that probably played a big roll in it being soft and rich in flavor.  The roll also did an excellent job of absorbing the little bit of grease that the meat produced.

Cheese-The cheese was only average.  It was pretty plain tasting.  It was mixed throughout the entire cheesesteak which is a big plus, but it was just too bland.  This along with a reason I will mention a little later played a big roll in my overall rating of the cheesesteak.

Meat-My favorite part of this cheesesteak was the meat.  It tasted amazing.  It was excellent quality meat and it was cooked to perfection.  There was a little bit of grease but the roll absorbed most of it.  Other than that the taste was amazing.  It was seasoned with a little salt, and a lot of pepper.  The amount of pepper used actually gave it a really good taste.  The meat had a little bit of a kick to it, but I was pleasantly surprised with its taste.  Lastly the meat was diced up in to pretty small pieces which is a personal preference of mine which made the meat portion the cheesesteak perfect.

Amount-The amount of the ingredients was pretty disaspointing except for the onions.  There were a ton of onions.  The sandwich definitely could have used a little more cheese.  From the picture below you can see that ratio of bread to meat wasn’t too even either.  The roll was your typical 10 inches so I don’t have any complaints about the bread.

Fried Onions-The fried onions included were really tasty and fried too perfection.  However they used fairly large pieces of onions which I am not a fan of.  Also the onions were just thrown on top of the sandwich which is also something I hate.  I am big proponent of all of the ingredients being mixed together throughout the entire sandwich.

In all the cheesesteak from Steaks on South was really good.  With more, and tastier cheese they could have received a rating of at least 4.5.  With some changes in cheese and the onions mixed throughout the entire sandwich they could have almost had a perfect score.  Even so I definitely recommend them.  However if I had to choose between Steaks on South and Ishkabibbles if I was in the 300 block of South Street I would still go with Ishkabibbles.  If there is a long long line there, definitely walk down the street to Steaks on South and give them a try because they are just about as good.  Steaks on South also has some pretty good cheese fries, which I also recommend.  They have a pretty big menu for being a cheesesteak place, so if you aren’t in the mood for a cheesesteak there is probably something else on the menu that will appeal to you.
