Cheesesteak Review #58: The Original Thunderbird of Broomall
3.0 out of 5 stars
My latest cheesesteak review took me into Delaware County on a Sunday afternoon. Right off of exit 9 on the Blue ROUTE (476 South) there is a restaurant that has been serving the Broomall area for over 50 years known as The Original Thunderbird. It’s a small place right off West Chester Pike which can easily be missed unless you are specifically looking for the establishment. As usual I ordered a cheesesteak with provolone cheese and fried onions.
Bread-The roll was very tasty. For a Sunday afternoon the roll was still very fresh. My only complaint is that it did not do a good job of absorbing the grease from the meat. The roll itself was drenched with grease from end to end. It made picking up the sandwich very messy and unenjoyable.
Cheese-The cheese was only average. It tasted like most other provolone cheese. There was a decent amount of it included in the sandwich, but most of the cheese remained near the top of the sandwich as compared to being melted and mixed throughout the entire thing.
Meat-The meat included was very tasty and seasoned perfectly with salt and pepper and probably some other things that I can’t think of off of the top of my head. The meat was also diced up evenly into medium size pieces and it was cooked pretty well as there were no burnt or under cooked pieces. However, my major complaint about the meat was its quality. I have never eaten a greasier cheesesteak before in my life. The roll did all it could absorbing as much grease as possible but there was still tons of grease dripping out of the sandwich as I was eating it.
Amount-The roll used was probably pushing 12 inches. There was a ton of greasy meat included in the sandwich which really filled the roll from end to end. The amount of cheese and fried onions were also proportional to the rest of the ingredients. In all this was a very large filling cheesesteak.
Fried Onions-The fried onions were pretty amazing. They were cut up in small pieces and fried to a perfect crispy texture and a nice caramel color. They tasted amazing. They were also mixed throughout the entire cheesesteak which is a huge plus for me.
The cheesesteak from The Original Thunderbird located in Broomall was kind of disappointing. The meat was terrible and too greasy. It lead to a huge sloppy mess while attempting to eat the sandwich. Everything else about the cheesesteak was pretty decent though. I don’t know if I caught them on a bad day or what, but most of the reviews I read about their cheesesteaks were extremely positive. I for one can not give The Original Thunderbird that great of a review after visiting them this one time. If you check out their menu they have just about anything you could ask for. So if you do visit The Original Thunderbird I would try ordering anything else from their menu except for the cheesesteak unless you want to eat a grease sandwich.

Dear Cheessteskmeoutto… or whoever you are. Your totally clueless. You use words like cheap and greasy with amaizing, tasty and perfect. I invite your opinion, challange your knowledge ,and discredit your review. Really you wont find higher quality ingrediants used to make a cheese steak anywhere.
Thanks for trying our sandwich anyway and best of luck to you,

Thank you for reading my blog. I’m sorry you don’t agree with the review I wrote. Maybe some day I can stop by and give it another try. Who knows, maybe I just stopped by on an off day.
Tom Greco, the man gave you his opinion. There’s no need to attack him. If you are going to attack him, at least you could double check your spelling on those big words. I discredit your discredit of his review : ). Although, I must admit, I was thinking the same thing that you said, when I read Cheesesteakmeout’s review. Cheesesteakmeout, you said the meat was tasty and seasoned perfectly, then in the final summary, you say the meat was terrible. I did a double take as soon as I read that myself. Before I even read this review, I took one look at the picture, and I said to myself, “That’s way too greasy”. I didn’t even need to taste it. I just read this review to see if Cheesesteakmeout had the same opinion, after eating it. I see that he says it was indeed much too greasy. So, Cheesesteak seems to have some sort of palate on him. It may just be the picture, but to me, that sub looks sopped in grease. Somewhat greasy is a must, but sopped in grease is not fun or funny.
